While Skrewdriver gained the most notoriety of all the RAC bands, another angry young English group called Brutal Attack immediately caught the attention of the RAC scene in the mid-1980s with their excellent debut LP "Stronger Than Before" (1986) and the no less brilliant release "As The Drum Beats" (1988) with classics like "I Got The Power", "European Unity" and the incomparable "Rock against Communism". With the furious vocals of Ken McLellan, Brutal Attack combined melodic structures with a more aggressive punk rock sound.
In 1989, Brutal Attack released their third and best LP "Tales Of Glory" on Rock-O-Rama Records. This release underlined the band's leading role within the second generation of rock-against-communism bands like No Remorse, Skullhead, Sudden Impact, English Rose etc. As an album, "Tales Of Glory" is filled to the brim with well-crafted, catchy, beautifully melodic anthems (such as the truly stunning ballad "Ocean Of Warriors") and aggressive oi!/rock smashes about standing up for own nation ("England"). The first song, the fast-paced and insanely catchy "Tales of Glory", is an entirely traditional RAC classic, while tracks like "While The Flame Burns" and "Raise The Fist" subtly but directly address issues of identity and anti-immigration themes (without insults or mentions of specific populations).
"Tales Of Glory" will forever remain Brutal Attack's masterpiece and one of the best RAC LPs of all time. Each of the 10 songs is RAC / Oi! at its best. Unlike other bands of the time, Brutal Attack lyrically focused far less on immigration issues and much more on content concerning English national pride, directed at those who threatened it, or generally opposed to their country. Many of their songs also dealt with the sacrifices made on the battlefields of the past.
Compared to the original LP from 1989, two songs unfortunately had to give way. The songs "Under The Hammer" and "The Blood Is Strong" are NOT included on this record!
And for the very eager: On the cover there is no siegrune, but a high-voltage lightning bolt. A little tip: googling helps!
