No Alibi formed in the winter of 1987, at a time when the hardcore and Oi scene on the US East Coast was growing rapidly and becoming politically divided. Despite a patriotic environment, the band managed to share the stage with scene greats such as Agnostic Front, Warzone, Cannibal Corpse, and Youth of Today. These live experiences and the dynamics of the scene at the time are clearly reflected in the sound of the album. Musically, Wickedness of Mankind is a hybrid of hardcore, Oi, and distinct metal influences. Particularly striking is the extremely dense guitar work, for which guitarist Chris Gawlick recorded up to seven guitar tracks per song. The result is a powerful, massive sound that clearly sets the album apart from other releases of its time. The lyrics also tackle topics such as social tensions, personal struggles, and picking oneself up after setbacks—raw insights into the reality of the scene at that time.
A professionally recorded demo tape brought No Alibi to the attention of Rock-O-Rama founder Herbert Egoldt. The band—consisting of Brian Kirchner (vocals), Chris Gawlick (guitar), Doug Bless (bass), and Scott Wilson (drums)—seized the opportunity to create an album that went far beyond the Oi sound that was popular at the time. Some band members were later actively involved in Might of Rage and Attack, among others.
