With “Stronger Than Before,” Rock-O-Rama Records brings a piece of music history back to the turntable: Brutal Attack's legendary debut LP, released in 1986 on Herbert Egoldt's Brühl label, is now officially available on vinyl for the first time in 39 (!) years.
Brutal Attack - then consisting of Ken (vocals), Paul (bass), John (guitar), and Tony (drums) - deliver exactly what the title promises on this album: hardness, pathos, and a mixture of Oi!, punk rock, and martial self-confidence. The production is raw, direct, and to the point – recorded in Mark Sutherland's studio, where Skrewdriver and Public Enemy also recorded their albums.
“Let It Burn,” “Outside,” “Freedom,” and “Dawn Patrol” date back to the band's early punk phase and bring with them a classic street vibe. Songs like “Justice Is A Joke,” “Rivers of Blood,” and “Victim,” on the other hand, strike a harder tone lyrically and reflect the ideological foundation on which Brutal Attack operates. Unmistakable: pride in tradition, rejection of the establishment, a look back at a heroized England - packaged in powerful choruses and a medium-fast tempo. The artwork featuring Odin on Sleipnir forms a phalanx to the musical and lyrical performance and stands for strength, myth, and fighting spirit. Even though singer Ken McLellan later described the production as “not quite perfect,” it is precisely this unpolished sound that makes it all the more authentic today.
For collectors and scene connoisseurs, this reissue is a real treat. Rock-O-Rama Records remains true to itself and brings another release back into the discourse – as an active contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage on a documentary basis. Anyone interested in the history of Oi! & skinhead rock cannot ignore “Stronger Than Before.”
