The “1000 Kreuze” LP by OHL from 1982 is a milestone of German punk and definitely a record that no fan can ignore in the discography of this legendary band. With a much fatter production than on their debut, the punk veterans around singer Deutscher W already showed back then which direction they would take in the coming decades. The political message, the striking lyrics and the uncompromising heaviness are still unmistakable today and make this album an immovable classic of this musical genre.
From cynical bad news to the political elite to bludgeoning guitar runs: Everything is just right here. Songs like “Belsen war ein KZ”, “Warschauer Pakt” or “Freiheitskämpfer” set off fireworks at breathtaking speed, pushing every stereo system to its limits. Nevertheless, OHL never lose their melodic edge: “Gott und die Welt” is immediately catchy and “Kaufhof” is also a prime example of catchy but uncompromising punk that is still demanded live today.
The cover photo, which shows a soldier from the First World War, also underlines the band's anti-war stance with its allusion to “Im Westen nichts Neues”. Here, OHL sounded out the boundaries of their time and, as early as 1982, urgently pointed out topics that have lost none of their relevance to this day.
This re-release is not just a must for die-hard punk fans. Newcomers can also experience impressively how brute and yet catchy German punk could sound in its heyday. Every song pulsates with energy and an unbridled desire for freedom.
Anyone looking for genuine, unadulterated German punk history will find a timeless document in the re-released “1000 Kreuze” LP, which will not only make collectors' hearts beat faster. Even more than 40 years later, the powerful production, the unvarnished “against it” attitude and the unyielding messages are a statement that no record shelf should be without. The full broadside against ideologies of all kinds and religious fanatics of all shades! As it should be: the whole thing, of course, true to the original on Rock-O-Rama Records :)
