Skrewdriver – Freedom What Freedom + Bonus, Edition 2025, LP
The legendary Skrewdriver album “Freedom What Freedom” from 1992 is back – now in an edition featuring a total of 18 tracks! The album not only includes 11 songs from the original release, but also 7 bonus tracks from the “Hail The New Dawn” LP, which are sure to delight fans and collectors alike.
With “Freedom What Freedom,” the band made a successful return to its former strength. After the rather mediocre albums “The Strong Survive” and “Live & Kicking,” Skrewdriver rediscovered its original, raw sound – with a lineup that hadn't changed in years: Ian Stuart on vocals, Stigger on guitar, Jon Hickson on bass, and John Burnley on drums. The multi-layered guitar playing is particularly noteworthy. Every solo is a delight, yet always in harmony with the structure and emotional depth of the songs. The drummer shines with precise percussion that makes the band's sound even more impressive and powerful.
The album is a passionate statement against the suppression of freedom—whether through the growing police state, the loss of liberties, or the establishment — and is therefore more relevant than ever in these times of woke excesses. Skrewdriver deliver their message uncompromisingly: songs like “One Land (Re-unification)” celebrate the reunification of Germany, while “This Little Piggy” offers humor. Particularly noteworthy is the song “Stolz” (Pride), whose German lyrics reflect the band's close connection to their German fans. In short, the album is an unambiguous manifesto from Skrewdriver – a tribute to freedom, European identity, and resistance to the establishment.
Ian Stuart in an interview at the time: "Basically, we sell more records in Germany than anywhere else. Since the Germans support us so much, I thought it was time to do something in German for them. I wrote the song in English, had it translated by a German friend (Magnus Wagegg, rest in peace!), recorded it on cassette so I could hear the accent and pronunciation, and then got started. Besides, Germany probably has the fastest-growing skinhead scene in Europe, and the Germans have been supporting the band for almost as long as the English. We've been signed to a German record label since 1984."
